President’s Message – February 2009

I wish to thank the chairmen and representatives of the 2009 Committees and many other Taberna residents who volunteer their time in the service of our community.  These committees spend many hours behind the scenes doing the tasks that are necessary for the governance of our community. This will be a particularly busy year as we will rebid and select contractors for maintenance and landscaping work for 2010/2011.

As mentioned at the annual meeting we will be completing the beautification projects in 2009 as we prepare to look our best for the New Bern 300th year celebration.  Thank you for all your efforts in helping to make Taberna stand out as a premier community in New Bern.  Overall we are doing a good job in maintaining the appearance of our homes and property and we are fortunate that we have had a small number of issues with covenants and rules violations.  This is critical to protecting the value of our property and helps those who are trying to sell their homes in the current economic recession.

Echoing a theme from Cindy Sutton in the January issue of the Tribune, please do your part to help the many fine businesses in New Bern that are struggling to get through the economic mess.  They are a vital part of why we like living here.  Please add buying more from the local economy to your New Year’s resolutions.

We continue to have sporadic outbreaks of car break-ins and thefts so security remains a concern and requires that we remain vigilant.  Taberna is an open community so thieves will take advantage whenever the opportunity presents itself.  Please help deter this activity by keeping car and garage doors locked and immediately report any incidents to the New Bern Police Department.  Also, actively support our Taberna Crime Watch team who are working with the NBPD to help lower criminal incidents in our area.

As noted in the November 2008 newspaper we installed a locked gate at the entrance to the parking lot for the canoe docks to better control unauthorized access.  For vehicle access to this area, keys to the gate can be obtained from the people listed in the Notice Board for canoe check-out.  Walking access for that area is on the right side of the gate.

By now you should have received your invoice for homeowner dues for 2009.  Thank you if you have paid.  To avoid a late fee, the dues must be paid within 30 days of the due date on the invoice.

The monthly Board meetings will be held at the HOA office at 5:30 PM on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  The next meeting will be February 18th.  The office is located at 3950 US Highway East (Route 70 and Thurman Road). If you need directions to the office, call one of the Board Members or myself.
