President’s Message – July 2009

The Board has approved a new landscape maintenance contract for the Emmen Rd area, beginning at the intersection with Sursee Court, which will provide improvements in that area over the next two months.  This includes new sod for the eroded grass areas, trimming of the Elaegnus Shrubs, addition of hardwood mulch to the berms to control weeds and erosion as well as enhancing the appearance of the berm’s, and maintenance of the plant beds.  This contract will provide for annual maintenance of that area in 2010 and 2011.  Bids for the other major landscape contracts in Taberna have been received and are currently being evaluated.  Recommendations for contractor selections will be presented to the Board for approval in July.

The Board is searching for four (4) candidates to serve on the Board of Directors beginning in January 2010.  These are needed to fill positions for terms expiring at the end of the year.  One of these is Suzanne Forsythe’s.  She has expressed a desire to step down as Treasurer after providing outstanding service to our community for several years.  If you are interested in serving on the Board and have a bookkeeping or financial background, the Treasurer position would be a good way to give something back to your community.   Please contact Steve Harman, Suzanne, or any of the Board members if you have any questions about serving on the Board.

Save the date – the Taberna community picnic is tentatively scheduled for September 26th.  Rick Layton is chairing a committee being formed to plan this annual event.  Community volunteers are needed to help plan and coordinate event activities and food catering.  Your help is essential to make this happen.  Please call Rick at 633-1093 to assist in him in planning and executing a fun filled event in September.

The Board will not ask the city to lower the speed limit on Taberna Way and Taberna Circle.  Most of the responses we received regarding this proposal opposed it.  The police reports for the past couple of months of enforcement did not show many violations for speeding or failure to stop in Taberna; most of those cited were Taberna people.  Based on this and no significant history of accidents or incidents involving bicycles, children or pedestrians, there is no substantial basis for lowering the speed limit.

Congratulations and thanks to the Taberna Bear Project team that collected the funds needed to acquire and paint our Taberna bear.  Our bear will be displayed downtown during the Tricentennial Celebrations in 2010 and then moved to Taberna for permanent display at a location to be determined.  We understand that painting of our bear will take place in the Old City Hall building on Craven Street across from Mitchell’s hardware.  You can stop by to see as the work progresses.  A special thanks to over 120 Taberna families whose contributions made this possible.

As you are aware the Taberna Country Club has been running a membership campaign for an extended period.  If you are not a member I urge you to consider taking advantage of their incentives to join and enjoy the superb golf, tennis, swimming, and dining amenities.  Also, inform your friends and neighbors of this great opportunity.  The Taberna Country Club is an integral part of our community and its success and growth are vital to preserving the value of our community and our homes.

The monthly Board meetings will be held at the HOA office at 5:30 PM on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.  The next meeting will be July 8th .  The office is located at 3950 US Highway East (Route 70 and Thurman Road). If you need directions to the office, call one of the Board Members or myself.
