President’s Message – May 2009

The Board is working with Building and Grounds and the sub-association representatives to complete the specifications and bid requirements for the 2010 and 2011 landscape maintenance contracts.  We will be going out in the next 4-6 weeks with invitations for bids from local contractors.  We have contracting and budgeting milestones in place to support selection and approval of contractors in the July timeframe and approval of our 2010 budget in the Sept timeframe.

In the last issue we invited homeowners to give us their thoughts on potential improvements to Todd Denson Park to complement the existing playground.  We received less than ten responses and the majority of these supported additional fencing to improve pet control.  The Board has under consideration a proposal to enhance safety at the park by fencing the back of the field to keep children and pets out of the wetland area and adding a fence linking the existing side fences that would separate the pets in the field from children at the playground.  Since the community has not indicated significant interest in other suggested improvements to Todd Denson Park, we do not anticipate including funds for such upgrades in the 2010 budget.

As anticipated, the increased traffic from adjacent communities commuting through Taberna has resulted in increased speeders within our community.  The Board is reviewing a recommendation from the Building and Grounds Committee to lower the speed limit on Taberna Way and Taberna Circle to 25 MPH to promote additional safety for people walking with their children and residents riding bikes.  With this all of Taberna would have a 25 MPH speed limit.  The ultimate decision will be made by the City of New Bern.  We believe they will be supportive if we make such a request.  Your thoughts relative to lowering the speed limit are welcome.

In this issue there is an article discussing plans for a private fund raising effort to sponsor a Taberna Bear as part of the 300th anniversary celebrations.  A committee has been formed to spearhead fundraising.  The Board endorses this effort to promote and showcase our community and support New Bern in the Tri Centennial Celebration.

As we start to enjoy spring, I urge all to support a community wide “spring cleaning” effort.  Winter has given us a crop of weeds everywhere.  I encourage everyone to get your lawns, home exteriors and yards cleaned up to show Taberna at its best.  Please review the guidelines posted on our HOA website regarding standards for yard appearance.

I recommend that everyone take a look at their Mailboxes and posts to see if it is in need of repair or a good “spring cleaning”.  We have observed several boxes needing painting and flags and numbers needing to be replaced.  I am told that Iron Out which can be purchased at Wal-Mart is good at removing rust prior to repainting.  Replacement boxes, posts, flags and Peel and Stick numbers are available for purchase from the HOA.  Please call Bob Livingston, 636-1465, to obtain these from our office.

We have been advised that some people are taking their lawn clippings and yard waste to vacant lots or common areas adjacent to wetlands.  Please do not use vacant lots and common areas as dumps.

The monthly Board meetings will be held at the HOA office at 5:30 PM on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.  The next meeting will be May 13th.  The office is located at 3950 US Highway East (Route 70 and Thurman Road). If you need directions to the office, call one of the Board Members or myself.
