PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, MARCH, 2010
Rick Layton, President, Taberna Homeowners Association
The monthly Board meetings will be held at the HOA office on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 5:30 PM. The next meeting with be on March 3rd. If you need directions to the office call one of the board members or me. The office is located at 3950 US Highway 70 East and Thurman Road.
During the February meeting of the THOA Board a motion was passed for two new committees in the HOA. The first committee will be the “Todd Denson Park Proposal Committee” that has been established to look at several proposals that the Board has received on how to best utilize this important community property. Past proposals will be included. The second committee is the “Canoe Dock/Nature Trail Committee”. This committee will have control over the maintenance of canoe dock area including the trail to the dock, the gazbo and the area around the dock. Both of these committees will need to be staffed by community volunteers. Please contact a Board member to become involved in these committees.
Sue McCarthy and Tom Tucker are co-chairing the Crime Watch committee and will be looking for volunteers to serve on it. This is yet another way you can get involved in the Taberna Community.
It is also time to form a committee for the annual Fall picnic. We need Taberna volunteers to help plan this event in order to make it a great occasion for the community.
The THOA Board has two articles in the “Taberna Tribune” this month that are noteworthy. The Board underwent a review of what we wanted to accomplish this year and have set forth the goals and measurable objectives for ourselves. Linda Pickens authored an article on the results of the survey of the Taberna Community taken at the end of 2009, before the annual meeting. We will post the numbers to back up the survey on the website, www.tabernahoa.org. Please read the articles and provide the Board with feedback on them. If you have not looked at the website please do so, as it is one of the ways that we can get community feedback quickly and take actions as necessary.
If you have questions as to when a Taberna committee meets please email or call me at ricklayton@msn.com or call 633-1093. I will provide you with the information. We need all the Taberna community to participate in the process of the Homeowners Association and lets not be limited by a few individuals always taking the lead. If you have a few hours you can spare become involved in your community.
Recently a question has risen concerning solicitations. The streets in Taberna are city owned and maintained, accordingly, the THOA cannot control or restrict people coming into Taberna to solicit. As we saw in the recent case of the girl selling planners, she had a peddler’s license and was legally entitled to go door to door. The only power we have is as individual homeowners with privacy rights. All residents have a right to tell anyone coming onto their private property that they do not wish to be solicited at home and request they leave the premises. If you see someone acting suspicious call the New Bern Police Department to investigate.
It is now March and time to make sure Taberna looks its best for the home and garden tours. When cleaning up your property do not put your clippings and cuttings into the wetlands because these are carefully regulated by the US government. The Taberna HOA can be fined heavily for blocking or misuse of these lands, even if the wetlands are privately owned by a homeowner. Be respectful of our community.
