President’s Message – August 2009
At the July 8th meeting, the B&G and sub-association committees presented their bid evaluations and recommendations for contractors to perform landscape maintenance services in 2010/2011. The Board will be working with the committees to finalize and sign contracts. The associated costs for these contracts will be included in the 2010 budgets now being drafted by the Finance Committee and the Treasurer. Thanks to all the committees for their outstanding work throughout the bid selection process.
Fred Leonard has informed us that Taberna Country Club and the nursery will be replacing the dead trees along Taberna Way this fall. The HOA is not funding this replacement.
The Board has approved a fence that would connect the existing fences at the rear of Todd Denson Park. This will help prevent children and pets from wandering into the swamp/wetlands in that area. The Board is continuing to review recommendations to place an additional connecting fence at the front that would enclose the soccer field to provide a secure, multiuse area. This would increase the comfort level of playground users who would be separated from pets in the enclosed area.
Bob Costanzo, our Wetlands Committee Chairman, met with the Corps of Engineers recently to help us understand our responsibilities for protection of designated wetlands within Taberna. Fortunately, we seem to be doing a good job and we are not aware of any major issues. We have many homes with yards that border the wetlands. The key to avoid future problems is to not damage these areas such as filling them in and/or dumping waste into them. These actions could result in an $11,000 fine for anyone causing such damage.
Please volunteer to help and remember to save the date - 26 September for the Taberna community picnic. BB&T and the Taberna Tribune will be assisting with sponsorships. Rick Layton’s committee needs more help with publicity, getting out flyers, collecting money, and entertainment. Please call Rick at 633-1093 or email him at ricklayton@msn.com. If we do not get more volunteers we will not be able to have the picnic.
Larry Alderson is leaving his position as Chairman of the Crime Watch Committee. We want to thank him for his dedication and outstanding efforts over the past years to help make Taberna a better and safer community. Please let me or Larry know if you are interested in taking this committee assignment.
The monthly Board meetings will be held at the HOA office at 5:30 PM on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. The next meeting will be August 12th. The office is located at 3950 US Highway East (Route 70 and Thurman Road). If you need directions to the office, call one of the Board Members or myself.
