President’s Message – September 2007
By Bob Costanzo, President
Taberna Homeowners Association
Our Taberna community picnic will be held at Todd Denson Park on Saturday, Oct. 6th from 5 to 7 pm. Between 2 and 4 pm residents are invited to attend activities that have been coordinated by the Crime Watch Committee, involving the New Bern Police and Fire Departments, and the Craven County EMS Unit. For more information about these events, please refer to the specific articles in this issue of the Tribune.
I want to thank all of the homeowners in Taberna who paid their Master Homeowners Association dues promptly this year. Currently we only have seven members who are late with their dues. This year was the first time that late fees were assessed on those who are delinquent. We are hopeful that the few who still owe dues will make their payments shortly.
On-street parking has become an issue in certain areas. Some residents have suggested that we need to be aware of where driveways are located so that a person backing out of the driveway has enough room to exit without damaging the parked car. It is especially important to make sure that emergency response vehicles can proceed without having to dodge cars parked on both sides of the street. It may be in our best interests for all vehicles to be parked on one side of the street only.
This summer Board members have received calls from residents concerning boats and campers in Taberna. The guidelines require that boats, boat trailers, other trailers, campers, recreational vehicles, utility vehicles or trucks (rated one ton or higher) may not be parked on any street right-of-way or on any lot overnight unless enclosed within a garage. We want to thank all of the members of the community who follow these guidelines.
Over the last eight months we have contacted residents who were in violation of a covenant or by-law. Once again our thanks go to those residents who responded positively to the request and eliminated the violation. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in these matters. Through all of our efforts we continue to keep Taberna one of the finest communities in this area.
The Emergency Response System (EMS) in our area has been a concern for some of us. This excerpt from a recent email sent by Stanley Kite, Director Craven County Emergency Services, updates us on this issue.
“I am pleased to announce to you that we have included New Bern Fire Department as a Medical First Responder in our EMS System Plan for Craven County. They will be dispatched upon notification of a 911 call or medical call in your Community. The First Responders can provide basic medical care including CPR and defibrillation in cases of sudden heart attack with patients who are not breathing and have no pulse. The First Responders are equipped to provide patient care until an ambulance arrives.
The primary EMS Unit for your area is still Township 7 EMS and they operate at the EMT I level and are attempting to move up to the Paramedic level. We also have Johnston Ambulance Service in your area and they have advanced to the paramedic level of care and will serve as a back up to the other EMS Providers. Please remember we still have Craven Regional and Bridgeton EMS that operate at the paramedic level and would be sent to your area if necessary.”
