President’s Message – May 2008

By Bob Costanzo, President

Taberna Homeowners Association

Now that pine tree pollen has stopped covering our cars and invading our homes, construction of the first building of town homes has been completed at Taberna Townes. Some of them were open for viewing during the Parade of Homes tour last month. The first business in Taberna Town Center, Dunkin’ Donuts, also appears to nearing completion.

The annual Taberna Community Picnic, held in Todd Denson Park during the fall, needs 2-4 people to coordinate this event. These volunteers would be working with members of the Homeowners Association and the Taberna Tribune. We would like to hold our first planning meeting in early June. If you are interested in helping with the picnic, please contact me as soon as possible. You may call me at 637-6628 or email me at abcostanzo@suddenlink.net. Please consider getting involved with this worthwhile event.

At the February THOA Board meeting, we received recommendations from Jim Wilson, Chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, on areas to be enhanced as part of the Beautification Project. All recommendations were approved and are in progress.

They include significant improvement of the landscaping around the two Airport Road entrances; the addition of flower beds at the intersections of Geneva Road/Taberna Way and Emmen Road/Sursee Court. The “Welcome to Taberna” sign on Taberna Way was removed since it limited the visibility of the stop sign. Plantings have been installed in that area and nine Cleveland Pear trees will be added near the entrance to Todd Denson Park. Seven trees and additional plants will be added on the berm of Emmen Road.

Due to the lack of curbs on Taberna Way, we face the ongoing maintenance issue of repairing ruts in the grass that are caused by tire tracks. We have been advised that the landscaper who maintains the Taberna Way area will make the needed repairs as time and weather permit.

Some of our homeowners who have properties that border Lake Lehman have complained about residents and guests failing to respect their private property rights. Unfortunately, a few people have reacted in a rude and belligerent manner when asked to leave the homeowner’s property. We have placed private property signs to indicate where the HOA common property ends. If you use this area, please stay within the HOA boundaries.

The Board invited County Commissioner Steve Tyson to the February meeting to share any updates that might impact us. Steve indicated that the funding to update the traffic signals on Route 70 was in process. This was subsequently approved and the changes should be made by the N.C. Department of Transportation shortly.

With the projected population growth in Craven County, the county is looking to purchase adequate land for the building of a new high school and middle school between Taberna and Carolina Pines. The Board expressed its desire for the county to move forward on zoning in this area. One of our residents called us to complain about the firing of a gun on property adjacent to Taberna. We expressed our concern for safety to Steve and requested that zoning laws limit the use of firearms near residential areas.

This year the Board of Directors will hold its monthly meetings at 5:30 PM, on the third Tuesday of each month at the HOA office. Our office is located at 3950 US Highway East (Route 70 and Thurman Road). For directions to the office, please call myself or one of the Board members. Any Taberna homeowner is welcome to attend.
