TABERNA RESIDENTS CRIME WATCH ALERT

June 17, 2009

New Bern Police Department is asking all citizens in communities within the city
to pay attention to locking their vehicles, home doors and windows. Now that the
Summer season is upon us there is more free time for the undesirables to
practice their poaching skills. Please understand that these criminals will be
out looking for easy money and items that can be taken quickly, including your
GPS, IPOD, glasses, anything that is small and is your vehicle or garage. Keep
all doors locked, check your motion sensors these are excellent ways to deter
crime. And don't neglect calling the New Bern Police Department if you see
anybody or anything that looks suspicious.

Taberna Crime Watch

> During the past few days/months much has been published on Tabmail
> regarding suspicious cars and suspicious people who might be roaming our
> Taberna neighborhoods during night time hours.
>
> During previous months it has been the direction of the Taberna Police
> Department that when this potential criminal type activity occurs it
> should be reported immediately. Any feedback to our community which they
> deem valuable and necessary, should be communicated by The Taberna Crime
> Watch Committee who act as the communication link between the police
> department and Taberna residents.  Their direction to our community has
> always been; when observing any suspicious or criminal activity, call the
> police department non-emergency number at 633-2020 and request a police
> cruiser be sent to the area in question.  Get as much information as
> possible before calling; make of Auto, license plate number, street
> location, activity which is a suspicious in nature.
>
> PLEASE DO NOT attempt to make contact with any suspicious people or auto's
> involved in any type of questionable activity (contact with a criminal
> during this activity could result in bodily harm to yourself) Call the
> police department, let them investigate.
>
> PLEASE DO NOT publish suspicious activity on Tabmail and create a needless
> alarm.
>
> PLEASE DO continue to immediately contact the N. B. Police Dept. with any
> and all suspicious activity.
>
> Once the police have responded to reported activity, conduct their
> investigation and complete the necessary reports, at that time they will
> determine if a crime may or may not be serious in nature and posses threat
> to our neighborhoods. Upon completion of this police leg work they will
> notify the Taberna Crime Watch Committee and give us direction as to how
> and what should be communicated back to our community.  In the past, the
> police department has alerted us to be on the look-out for specific
> criminal activity we have passed it on to our residents. The majority of
> crimes investigated by the N.B. Police Dept. in our community are domestic
> in nature and are generally not a threat to our populous.
>
> Publishing suspicious neighborhood activity on Tabmail in many cases
> creates needless alarm to the many single seniors citizens who reside in
> Taberna.  For that reason we ask that you keep this type of communication
> activity off the Taberna Tabmail Network. Let's allow the police
> department to direct the Taberna Crime Watch Committee in alerting the
> community when there appears to be a threat or they need our eyes and ears
> to assist their investigative efforts.
>
> During the past two years the Crime Watch Committee has communicated many
> messages warning residents to keep their garage doors closed, house
> secured/locked and outside auto's in your driveway or street locked at all
> times.  Thanks to all residents, we have significantly reduced these very
> preventable nuisance crimes.
>
> As one of our residents recently so wisely suggested in their Tabmail, we
> must be alert to any and all potential criminal activity and look out for
> our neighbors as you look out for your own family. We are in this together
> folks.
>
> We live in a very low crime community and by keeping a watchful eye,
> reporting suspicious activity and practicing good personal crime
> prevention habits we can keep it this way.
>
> Please personally contact me with any questions.
