Presidents Message – March 2007
by Bob Costanzo, President TMHOA

In last month’s message I included some information concerning emergency services provided by Craven County. The county’s emergency medical services are provided on a franchise basis to all within Craven County’s 728 square miles. Presently, Township 7’s Rescue 20 EMS unit, located on Old Cherry Point Road, is the primary response unit for Taberna. The men and women in this service are upgrading their skills and soon will attain the level of paramedic. To be certified as a paramedic, an additional three years of study may be required. This EMS unit currently has two vehicles and employs two paid staff during the day and one in the evening. Certified volunteers supplement that staff. Johnston Ambulance Service (JAS), located on Old Cherry Point Road, has been certified as a responder and is part of the 911 response service.

Stanley Kite, Craven County’s Director of Emergency Services, provided this bit of useful information about our cell phones. One of the many features of our phones is the ability to send a signal that can help an EMS unit locate a person in an emergency. Director Kite urges us not to disable this feature.

The quality of the sewer lines in our area has been an issue for many years. The City has made many efforts to determine the cause and find a solution to this problem. Earlier this month, New Bern took a step to solve the sewer problem by authorizing work on the sewer line on Old Airport Road near the Evans Mill sub-division. This project will divert some sewage from the Taberna sewer lines and should help minimize the sewage spills. Additional work on the sewer lines in Taberna is required. As the City’s plans are finalized, we will be informed as to the impact on our community.

Thanks to the efforts of Board member Alva Windham, a website for the Taberna Homeowners Association is now available at http://www.tabernahoa.org. The e-mail feature provides residents with an opportunity to e-mail their questions or comments to the Homeowners Association. The Crime Watch link makes it possible for that organization to advise us of recent alerts in Taberna. Also included are the names of the Crime Watch Captains for Taberna. I recommend that you take the opportunity to visit this site and give us your feedback.

We are pleased to say that very few covenant violations were reported to the Board this month. The most common violation now involves propane tanks. With the exception of tanks commonly used with outdoor gas grills, all tanks should not be visible from the golf course or the street. In some instances, homes located on or near a corner lot have tanks that are behind the home but are visible from the side street. In both cases, it is important that the tank be appropriately screened to insure that it meets the current guidelines.

The HOA Board of Directors holds regular meetings the second Tuesday of each month. If you have a question, concern or suggestion regarding our community, please contact one of your Board members.
